Question- Same (Botswana): Hello Pastor, I love and appreciate you. One of my Teevo members asked about the controversy about the Sabbath day being on Saturday and which church must be doing it wrongly, that is the Sunday goers or the Saturday goers. Can you please brief up my knowledge and understanding about this?
Answer: There are no controversies because the
Saturday is known to be the Sabbath but as to which church is doing it right, I
think he means meeting on Sunday or meeting on Saturday; which is doing it
right? The early church started meeting on Sunday because it was the day of
resurrection being the first day of the week and the early church did not
disregard the Sabbath and are not claiming that Sunday has become the Sabbath.
In Matthew chapter 12 verses 8, Jesus already declared that the
son of man is the Lord of the Sabbath. So, the Bible talks about they gathering
on the first day of the week. So I think you can put your mind at rest. There’s
no dispute about the Sabbath. Sabbath day was appointed to be the seventh day
of the week which is the Saturday. But in Christianity, we have been brought
into God’s Sabbath, so we are already in the Sabbath according to the
scriptures, not the weekly Sabbath. The fulfillment of the real Sabbath has
come. The Bible says we are now in his rest, so in the law it was a type of
God’s rest when He commanded the people to do nothing but rest. Now we have
entered into His rest and that’s what the Bible tells us; we are in the real
Sabbath and the Sabbath is every day, your whole life is into the Sabbath now.
But we meet on Sundays because the early church met on the first day of the
week which they called the Lord’s Day because Jesus resurrected on that day. But
again remember, it’s a matter of convenience. For example, if you live in the
Middle East where many of those nations are predominantly Moslems, the free day
is Friday. Sunday is a work day, so, the Christians met on that free day which
is Friday not Saturday or Sunday. Why? It’s a matter of convenience. You need
to understand that because in Christ we are now in the Sabbath. So which ever
day you appoint for your meeting is perfectly in order.
